Standing above the surrounding countryside on a rocky hill, Hochosterwitz Castle is a striking sight before you even reach its entrance. But its appearance from a distance is only the beginning. Walking up towards the castle, through its sequence of fortified gates, gives you time to appreciate both the landscape and the building itself.
I visited in spring and chose to walk up. What stood out to me was how beautiful and well maintained the castle grounds were, along with the changing views along the way. At different points on the climb, you can look out over the surrounding nature or see the castle above you from another angle.
With a museum, indoor spaces to explore and a lovely courtyard where you can stop for coffee, Hochosterwitz makes a rewarding stop when exploring this part of Austria.

🌍 Where Is Hochosterwitz Castle?
Hochosterwitz Castle is located in Carinthia, in southern Austria, near the town of St. Veit an der Glan. It belongs to the municipality of St. Georgen am Längsee.
Its elevated position makes it a prominent feature of the landscape. The castle rises above the countryside, with its walls and towers following the shape of the rocky hill beneath them.
For travellers exploring Carinthia, it is an interesting addition to a trip focused on lakes, small towns and rural scenery. It brings a different perspective to the region, combining a historic landmark with an outdoor walk and wide views.

📖 A Little History Before You Visit
Hochosterwitz was first mentioned in a document in 860, although the castle you see today developed over many centuries.
The Khevenhüller family played an important role in its expansion during the 16th century. Its famous sequence of 14 fortified gates formed a defensive route towards the upper castle, creating multiple obstacles for anyone trying to reach it.
These gates are still one of the most distinctive parts of a visit. Walking through them helps you understand the castle’s layout: each gateway marks another stage of the climb, with the main buildings remaining above you until you approach the top.
🚶 Walking Up Through the 14 Gates
If you enjoy walking and feel comfortable with an uphill route, the climb is a memorable part of visiting Hochosterwitz.
During my spring visit, I walked up rather than taking the lift. One of my favourite aspects was being able to see the castle from different points along the route. As you gain height and move around the hillside, its appearance changes, giving you several opportunities to stop and appreciate its architecture.
The views over the surrounding countryside are beautiful too. Take your time between the gates, looking outward towards the landscape as well as upward towards the castle.
The grounds felt well cared for, which added to the enjoyment of the walk. Allow time for pauses and photographs instead of treating the ascent simply as a way to reach the entrance.
Comfortable shoes are a sensible choice for the climb and the walk back down.
🏰 What to See Inside Hochosterwitz Castle
Once you reach the upper castle, there is more to explore than the exterior alone.
The museum includes displays of armour, weapons and historic artwork, adding context to the fortifications you have just walked through. You can also visit some of the castle’s interior spaces, giving you a chance to experience it from within.
Moving between the museum, accessible rooms and outdoor areas gives the visit a varied pace. After the climb, take time to explore rather than heading straight back down.

🌿 Views of the Castle and the Surrounding Nature
The scenery is a major part of Hochosterwitz’s appeal.
From the route and upper grounds, you can look out across the countryside surrounding the castle. Its position above the landscape makes the connection between the building and its setting especially striking.
For me, the views of the castle itself were just as enjoyable. Seeing it from different angles during the ascent lets you appreciate details that are less obvious from a single viewpoint.
If you enjoy photography, leave time for both wider landscape images and closer views of gateways, walls and architectural details.
☕ A Coffee Break in the Courtyard
The courtyard is a lovely place to pause after walking up and exploring the castle.
There is a pleasant space for coffee within the courtyard, surrounded by the historic buildings. It fits naturally into a slower visit: climb through the gates, explore the museum and indoor spaces, then take a break before making your way down.
This was one of the details I liked about Hochosterwitz. Alongside the history and views, there is room to sit and enjoy the setting.

🚡 Walking Up or Taking the Lift?
Hochosterwitz also has a lift, providing an alternative to the uphill walk.
Walking gives you the experience of passing through the 14 gates and seeing the castle gradually come closer. If that is something you would enjoy, allow enough time to make the ascent without rushing.
The lift may suit visitors who want to avoid the climb. It requires a separate ticket, so check the current options and prices before visiting.
If you have specific mobility requirements, contact the castle directly to confirm access within the grounds and museum.
🎟️ Tickets, Opening Hours and Practical Tips
Hochosterwitz has seasonal opening hours, so check the official schedule before planning your trip. Opening days and last admission times vary during the season.
You can find current ticket prices and visiting information on the official Hochosterwitz Castle website.
A few practical tips:
- Leave enough time for the climb. The gates and changing views deserve a few pauses along the way.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking uphill if you choose the gate route.
- Bring water, particularly on warmer days.
- Check the last admission time, which is earlier than the closing time.
- Allow time for the museum and courtyard, as well as the walk.
- Keep your camera handy during the ascent. Some of the most interesting views appear before you reach the top.

✨ Is Hochosterwitz Castle Worth Visiting?
In my opinion, yes. I found Hochosterwitz beautiful, well maintained and enjoyable to explore.
What made it memorable was the combination of experiences: walking through the gates, seeing the castle from different angles, looking out over the surrounding nature and exploring some of its interior spaces.
The courtyard adds a pleasant final stop, especially if you want to sit down for coffee before heading back.
If you are travelling through Carinthia and enjoy castles, photography and countryside views, Hochosterwitz is a place worth making time for.
